What is business energy?
Business energy is the gas and electricity your company uses to run: lighting, heating, machinery, kitchens, tills. It comes through the same network as at home, but the contracts are different. Business deals are agreed commercially, there is no price cap, and you usually can’t leave a fixed contract early.
That makes the price you lock in matter. A few minutes comparing before you commit can be worth more than most of the admin you will do this year.
How business energy prices work
Every business quote is built from the same four parts.
- Unit rate
- What you pay for each kWh you use, in pence. The bigger your usage, the more this matters.
- Standing charge
- A fixed daily charge for being connected, whether you use energy that day or not.
- Contract length
- How long your rates are fixed for. Longer terms trade flexibility for certainty.
- Your usage
- Suppliers price around how much you use a year, so an accurate figure gives an accurate quote.
Renewing? Don’t just accept the letter
A renewal offer can look like a good deal, especially if it’s below your last rate, but it isn’t always the best price available. And if your contract ends without a new one agreed, you can be moved onto out-of-contract rates, which are usually higher. There is no price cap for businesses.

How to compare quotes properly
The lowest unit rate isn’t always the cheapest deal. A higher standing charge can cancel it out, especially for a small site, so look at the total cost over the whole contract.
Compare like with like. Two quotes built on different usage figures can make the wrong one look cheaper. Every price we send is worked out on the same usage for your meter, so the comparison is fair.
Check the term and the start date too. A price is only useful if it starts when your current contract ends.
Business energy tariffs explained
- Fixed
- Your unit rate and standing charge are locked for the length of the contract, usually 1 to 5 years. Easy to budget for, and the most common choice.
- Variable or flexible
- Rates move with the wholesale market. Prices can fall as well as rise, so these suit businesses that can absorb changes.
- Renewable
- Electricity backed by renewable sources. Some suppliers offer it on standard fixed terms, others at a small premium.
- Out of contract and deemed
- What you pay when a contract ends without a new one, or when you move in and haven't agreed one. These are usually the most expensive rates.
Small and larger businesses
- Small and micro businesses
- Shops, offices, cafés and trades. Energy is rarely top of the to-do list, which is exactly why renewals get waved through. You may also count as a microbusiness, which gives you extra protections from Ofgem, such as clearer contract terms and limits on back-billing.
- Larger businesses
- Higher usage usually earns a lower unit rate, but small differences add up fast across a big bill.
Business energy questions
How quickly will I get my prices?
Most people finish in about a minute. Enter your postcode, confirm your meter and a few details, and your live prices are emailed to you straight away, with a link to your own prices page.
When should I start comparing my renewal?
As soon as your renewal letter arrives, or earlier. Suppliers will usually price a new contract months before your current one ends, and agreeing early means you are not rushed into a rate or rolled onto out-of-contract prices.
Why does my contract end date matter?
It sets when a new contract can start and when you could be moved onto out-of-contract rates. Some contracts also have a notice window for leaving, so check your terms or your last bill for the date.
Can I get gas and electricity together?
Yes. Choose both when you start and we price each meter, so you can take both fuels from one supplier or pick the best price for each.
I have more than one site. Can you help?
Yes. Get prices for each address, or reply to your prices email and our team will put a multi-site quote together for you.
Does my credit score affect my prices?
It can. Suppliers may run a credit check before accepting a business contract, and a weaker score can limit the tariffs on offer or mean a deposit is asked for.
Will my supply be interrupted if I switch?
No. Your new and old suppliers handle the transfer between them. The energy comes through the same pipes and cables, so your supply carries on as normal.
I've just moved into new premises. What should I do?
Take a meter reading on the day you move in, then get prices straight away. Until you agree a contract you will usually be on the supplier's deemed rates, which tend to be higher.
Does it cost to get a business energy quote?
No. Getting prices through SupplySwitch is free. If you choose a contract, SupplySwitch is paid a commission by the supplier, which is included in the prices you see.
Does the energy price cap apply to businesses?
No. The domestic energy price cap does not cover non-domestic contracts. Business prices are agreed commercially, so rates vary by supplier, usage, location and contract terms.
